Welcome to the Heuser Early Intervention Program!
Heuser’s Early Intervention Program is one of three programs housed on the campus of HHI. This program provides home-based services for the families of infants and toddlers (up to three years of age) with hearing loss, communication and other developmental delays through the Kentucky and Indiana First Steps programs.
Early intervention is vital for babies and young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Research shows that the communication skills of children who receive an early diagnosis of hearing loss, early amplification via appropriately fit devices and early intervention services by six months of age are commensurate with that of their peers at twelve months of age.
Our services are designed to educate, coach and empower parents and caregivers to enhance the development of children by incorporating appropriate strategies for developing listening and language skills into the child’s daily experiences and routines. Our therapists address many issues that arise, including the importance of wearing hearing aids all waking hours, ideas for keeping the child’s hearing aids on, developing a “listening attitude” and promoting the development of vocabulary and spoken words.

Early intervention programs have been established to meet the specific developmental needs of infants and toddlers age birth to three years who have medical conditions or other factors that result in delays in development. These services have been proven to have a significant impact on the child’s ability to overcome challenges, learn new skills and…
