Did you know that an estimated 48 million Americans experience some degree of hearing loss? Even more surprising is that only a fraction of people with hearing loss are receiving treatment for this. Oftentimes, hearing loss comes on so gradually that people go years before realizing they have a problem.
One of the issues is that people are unsure of when they should make an appointment with an audiologist to have their hearing checked. Let’s go over a few factors that can help decide whether or not you should get a hearing test.
You Have Signs of Hearing Loss
While this one may seem obvious, many people can ignore or minimize the early signs of hearing loss because they are subtle. However, if you experience any of the following, you should schedule an appointment for a hearing test:
- You frequently ask people to repeat themselves.
- You need to have the volume up loud when watching TV or listening to music.
- It sounds like everyone around you is mumbling.
- It’s hard to filter out background noise in busy environments, like when out to dinner at 610 Magnolia.
- You have trouble differentiating voices when multiple people are talking.
- You are more easily fatigued in social situations because you’re working harder to understand what’s being said.
- You miss higher-pitched sounds, such as your phone beeping.
- Family members or other loved ones have commented on your hearing or suggested that you get a hearing test.
You Are 50 or Older
While hearing loss can occur at any time, it does become more likely as we age. If you are 50 or older and haven’t had your hearing tested in the last few years, it’s a good idea to go in for a screening. If your hearing is normal, your provider will probably recommend that you come back to recheck in a few years. If you have hearing loss, you can begin early treatment with hearing aids and help reduce your risk of experiencing the negative effects of untreated hearing loss.
You Work in Noisy Conditions
Regular exposure to noise levels above 85 decibels is one of the leading causes of hearing loss among all age groups. If you are frequently exposed to volumes at or above this level at work, you should get regular hearing screenings in addition to making sure you are provided with quality hearing protection devices at work.
