Funding from company’s annual Community Service Awards program will support children affected by hearing, speech and language challenges
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – May 18, 2022 – Each year, Northwestern Mutual, a leading financial services company, recognizes the leadership of its financial advisors who make a difference in their own communities through exemplary volunteerism. As part of these efforts, the company, through its Foundation, will award $310,000 in grants to nonprofits nationwide through its 2022 Community Service Awards.
This year’s program recognizes 17 of the company’s financial advisors for their commitment to positively impacting their communities through dedicated volunteer service. Each winner has been awarded a grant to benefit a local nonprofit he or she is involved with. Louisville resident Ralph Barringer, a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Louisville, has been named a 2022 Most Exceptional Community Service Award winner, receiving a $25,000 grant for Heuser Hearing & Language Academy (HHLA). Barringer also received an additional $5,000 grant for his work in supporting HHLA and its work with children with cancer, for a total of $30,000 in grants.
“Making a positive impact in the community is what our advisors do every day while they serve their clients. Their passion for giving back is demonstrated by their dedication to incredible causes that are making a real difference in their own backyards,” said Steve Radke, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “At Northwestern Mutual, we’re proud to have a network of advisors who are committed to bettering the lives of those around them.”
Heuser Hearing & Language Academy (HHLA) provides early intervention for children with hearing, speech and language challenges. Barringer joined the board of directors in 1991, serving as president from 1999-2001 and now as vice president, where he helped raise over $4 million to construct a new school for the children. The grant will allow HHLA to continue offering highly individualized education that fosters physical, intellectual, social and emotional development in students with speech, language or processing disorders or delays.
“I am passionate about HHLA’s mission and the way they are helping children with hearing, speech and language challenges progress, communicate and begin to thrive,” Barringer said. “I enjoy working alongside my fellow club members and volunteering with many dedicated and compassionate individuals and organizations to help provide families a strong foundation to build successful futures for their children.”
Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, has donated more than $6.6 million to nonprofits nationwide through its Community Service Awards program since the initiative launced in 1995. The 2022 winners will present their grants to their nonprofits throughout the country this spring.
