Louisville, KY (April 25, 2020)- As Coronavirus continues and the need for social distancing extends, businesses must stay creative to support the consumers. The clinic at Heuser Hearing Institute in Louisville has created a care hotline for anyone with hearing health questions or needs regardless of whether or not they are a Heuser patient.

The hotline number is (502) 324-1271.

During this uncertain time the doctors at Heuser want to continue their work and assist anyone that may need help. The Hotline is answered and operated by professional audiologist and audiology residents who work within Heuser. Callers include individuals who may have hearing aid damage, experienced sudden hearing loss, or patients with pre-existing conditions who may be worried to leave their homes.

Along with the Care Hotline, Heuser is providing curbside assessments for individuals including hearing aid fittings, performance testing plus measurements, and running diagnostics. Dr. Ingrid Edwards, Heuser Hearing Institute Clinical Director says, “we feel good about providing these resources for our community. In the mix of patients, we have helped 4 patients with sudden hearing loss. Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency that can be caused from many factors but requires immediate medical and medicinal intervention to recover hearing. We were able to identify the sudden loss and connect the patients with the medical attention they needed.” As for curbside services Dr. Edwards continues, “we have completed a few entire curbside assessment including diagnostics, fitting and hearing aid performance measures. At least one of these fits was from the hotline as the patient would be homebound for several months taking care of a family member, but their hearing aids were broken.”

The Heuser community understands the risk that being out in public poses to some patients so Heuser is currently staying open to provide essential services so patients with ear, hearing and speech disorders can continue to hear urgent information from officials, communicate with their doctors,

If you or your loved ones are deaf or hard of hearing there are several applications and services patients can install on their own smartphones and other devices which may provide life-saving communications functionality, including video remote interpreting and live transcription services. These technologies may be essential when medical professionals are wearing personal protective equipment such as masks which may inhibit lipreading or other communication techniques.
