My parents noticed that my vocabulary was very limited in the years prior to our appointment with an audiologist. They met with a number of other specialists and received a number of misdiagnoses before our appointment with Louisville Deaf Oral School. After I was diagnosed with hearing loss, my parents were informed that I had the vocabulary of a one-year-old at age 5, and that my probability of catching up and attending a \u201cnormal\u201d school was grim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the hard work and dedication of both LDOS and my parents through new hearing aids, speech language therapy, and school, I was able to go on do the improbable and graduate from St. Xavier High School and the University of Louisville with my first job out of college at the Dallas Cowboys.\u00a0 Today, I am currently married to Lydia, and we welcomed our first child, Aiden, in April.\u00a0 I am forever grateful for Louisville Deaf Oral School for making sure I didn\u2019t fall through the cracks and lead a fulfilling life.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehearinginstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/m-shea-2-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10312\" width=\"301\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehearinginstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/m-shea-2-2.png 640w, https:\/\/thehearinginstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/m-shea-2-2-256x256.png 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I attended Louisville Deaf Oral School from 1994-1996 after being diagnosed with hearing loss when I was nearly 5 years old.
