- Imitates and matches sounds with own speech production (though frequently unintelligible) especially in response to human voices or loud noises<\/li>

- Identifies things in response to questions such as body parts, animals sounds and familiar pictures in books<\/li>
- Uses some single words; while not complete or perfectly pronounced, the words should be clearly meaningful<\/li>
- Uses p, b, m, h, w <\/em>in words<\/li>
- Follows simple spoken directions<\/li>
- Learns new words quickly<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

- Uses everyday words heard at home or at daycare\/school<\/li>
- Enjoys being read to and shown pictures in books; points out pictures upon request<\/li>

3 Years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Understands and uses a variety of words including verbs, pronouns and adjectives<\/li>
- Answers simple who, what <\/em>and where <\/em>questions<\/li>
- Uses pronouns and plural forms<\/li>
- Begins to use longer utterances<\/li>
- Has a vocabulary of 1000 words<\/li>
- Speech is understood 75% of the time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
4 Years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Hears and understands most of what is said at home and\/or at school<\/li>
- Consistently follows more complex directions<\/li>
- Talks about what happened during the day<\/li>
- Keeps a conversation going<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
5 Years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Speech should be understood by most people, although some words may still be mispronounced \u2013 such as the \/s\/ sound, particularly in blends with other consonants (e.g., \u201cstreet,\u201d \u201csleep,\u201d \u201cask\u201d).<\/li>
- Tells a short story<\/li>
- Talks in different ways depending on the listener and the place. Uses shorter sentences with younger children and talks louder when in a noisier environment<\/li>
- Effectively relays information and communicates with others in a variety of settings<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
